Drove to Zion and spent three nights inside the park at the lodge. I just assumed he/she would be going in the summer lol.įlew into Las Vegas and rented a car. I just realized that OP didn't share a timeline. But it is very pretty and worth visiting. Unlike Zion, it is at higher elevation and it is covered in snow in winter so it may be quite cold and hiking is limited. The route through Death Valley is long although we did it once also (not in winter). We tried the nothern route once and had to turn around due to weather advisory. I-80 is a (longer) option too though Donner pass in the winter may require tire chains or even be closed. I would think that if there is no direct route across from the west to the east that ends up in Las Vegas, it might arguably be as far via I-80 and down I-15 as it would be to come up I-15 from the south, no? I have also driven to Death Valley from Las Vegas. I have also driven I-80 from Salt Lake City to the Bay Area. Without looking at a map (lazy me lol), how does one cut across from CA into NV in the south? Is it I-5 to I-15 near Bakersfield(?) or is there a different way even north of there (via Death Valley, which I thought was not directly accessible from the west)?įor the record: I have driven from Irvine to Cedar City (near St George) and onwards (IIRC, that was I-5 to I-10 to I-15 or something like that). If not then Las Vegas might be the better base as it has a major airport. PS This is assuming you are based in San Jose (can't tell from the question). The drive through the desert is somewhat boring, but you can stop over in Las Vegas. Not really a problem with kids (easier than airplanes). We drove to Zion and other parks in southern Utah several times from San Jose. It is 10 hours driving vs 4 hours flying plus time to get to/from airport, TSA, delays, rental car. But I would not consider flying because of all the hassles.
